Microbial Contamination Of Air Conditioning Units

During a recent call out to a split system that wasn’t performing well, we discovered the microbial growth on an indoor fan wheel seen in the picture to the right.

At Altitude Air Solutions, we’ve met many homeowners who aren’t aware of the need to have their air conditioners regularly cleaned and maintained. Air conditioning is supposed to have positive health impacts in the home and office space, not negative.

Cleaning the filters is only one part of air conditioner maintenance.

The rest needs to be performed by an air conditioning specialist at least every 12 months.

What Is Microbial Contamination?

Microbial contamination means your air conditioner has been taken over by one or more microbes. These include fungi, mould and bacteria.

These organisms can be found on various internal components of your air conditioner; sometimes the growth is visible from the outside.

You may also notice a mouldy, damp smell when your unit is running.

How Does Microbial Growth Occur?

Air conditioning units are the perfect breeding ground for microbes. Filters can only capture some of the dust, organic particles and spores that are drawn into the unit during normal use.

The rest falls onto heated surfaces and once they combine with water start to germinate.

Your air conditioning unit then distributes the particles throughout your home.

Health Effects of Microbial Contamination of Air Conditioning Units

Microbial contamination of air conditioning units can negatively affect the health of yourself and your family, particularly young children, the elderly and those that have allergies, and asthma.

Some common symptoms associated with microbial growth in air conditioners include:

  • Breathing problems
  • Wheezing and chest tightness
  • Frequent colds
  • Continuous cough
  • Hay fever
  • Asthma attacks
  • Sore throat
  • Sore, dry eyes
  • Nasal congestion
  • Headaches and dizziness
  • Flu or flu-like symptoms

A contaminated air conditioning unit is also less efficient and will use more power than it needs to run properly.
